spain

tenerife doesn't treat responsible tourism as the trade-off for luxury. here, it's becoming expected.

one island holds most of a landscape range that elsewhere would take a continent. black sand beaches to the south, laurel forest to the north, and between them, teide, spain's highest peak, still shaping the weather around it after millennia. drive from coast to crater and the terrain changes twice over. tenerife is a biosphere certified destination, first certified in 2021 and renewed since, its sustainability commitments verified against the un's sustainable development goals.
// in practice
  • biosphere certified destination, first certified in 2021 and renewed on independent audit since
  • commitments verified against the un's seventeen sustainable development goals
  • dozens of local tourism businesses now working through the same biosphere framework, extending the certification into the island's wider business network
  • the pico del teide cable car runs on 100% solar power
  • the island has a clear and steadfast commitment to the 17 SDGs that make up the 2030 agenda
  • tenerife tourism is a signatory to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate action in Tourism
  • tenerife has turned its sustainability commitment into three charters — whale watching, nature activities, and visitor commitments — built to protect biodiversity while raising the bar on tourism quality.

// well suited for
  • incentive groups wanting genuine landscape range without multiple flights
  • conferences and congresses needing purpose-built infrastructure close to a major city
  • programmes combining beach, volcano and forest elements in a single itinerary
  • groups prioritising a destination with third-party verified sustainability credentials
  • winter-sun incentives for buyers seeking reliable warmth outside peak season

overview

between the coast and the crater, tenerife celebrates its wilderness and its luxury hospitality.

for luxury groups, the argument starts with five-star density. the island's top properties come with the meeting requirements built in: spaces that scale from board-level dinners to full congresses, staff with real international MICE experience, and the kind of know-how that only comes from running complex group programmes regularly.

what teide adds is something most five-star coastlines can't offer: altitude, and a genuinely different register within the same programme. parador de las cañadas del teide sits inside the volcano's crater at over 2,000 metres, cool and quiet in a way that has nothing in common with the coast forty minutes below it. a group can have dinner on the beach one evening and stand inside a national park the next morning, without an airport in between.

tenerife is the only place in europe where whale watching runs all year round, a rare year-round wildlife encounter on a five-star coastline.

gala dinners and cocktails can move beyond the hotel ballroom, to eco banana plantations and wineries, including one in vilaflor, the highest municipality in spain, where altitude and vines set the scene.

the congress side holds its own too. auditorio de tenerife adán martín, its sail-shaped silhouette anchoring the santa cruz waterfront, gives conferences a landmark building in the island's capital. finca la gañanía handles the smaller, private end of a programme, dinners and receptions that need a sense of occasion rather than scale.

put together, tenerife offers something few luxury destinations manage at once: five-star density, real landscape contrast, and a certification that says none of it comes at the environment's expense.

what this could look like

  • a private dinner at mb by martín berasategui, one of two michelin-starred restaurants inside the abama resort

  • a guided hike through the laurel forest of anaga

  • a morning at the retreat, abama's hotel-within-a-hotel, built for groups wanting privacy turned up further

  • an ascent of teide by cable car, running entirely on solar power, for views across the whole island

  • a private beach session on abama's own stretch of coast, followed by a round on its championship golf course

  • a whale and dolphin watching excursion off the island's coast

  • a congress session at auditorio de tenerife, its sail-shaped hall anchoring the santa cruz waterfront

  • a reception at parador de las cañadas del teide, inside the volcano's crater at over 2,000 metres

  • an evening at finca la gañanía, a canarian estate set among gardens, for a dinner with a genuine sense of occasion

  • a stroll through puerto de la cruz's historic centre, older and quieter than the resort towns further south
